Skiddaw graptolites have been found not at exposure, but by searching through extensive screes (Cooper et al. 1995, 2004). The Manx Slates of the Isle of Man are the equivalents of the Skiddaw Group but, as there are few screes on the Isle of Man, graptolites have only ever been found on two occasions, a century apart (Bolton, 1899; Rushton, 1993). Dendroidea (subphylum Stomochordata, class Graptolithina) An order of graptolites that existed from the Middle Cambrian to the Lower Carboniferous. Most lived attached to the sea bed and were upright and bushy in appearance. The denitrified low oxygen zone in Early Paleozoic oceans is proposed as a potential habitat of planktic graptolites.

This is a fine assemblage of graptolites known as Phyllograptus archaios. Graptolites are colonial animals belonging to the hemichordates. The term originates from the patronymic genus Graptolithus. The graptolites have a cosmopolitan distribution, and so serve as index fossils in many locations.

The early origin and evolutionary radiation of graptolites (Hemichordata: Pterobranchia) is a story told almost entirely in the fossil record, but for four extant species of the genus Rhabdopleura.

Graptolites were largely planktic, marine organisms, and as one of the first groups that explored the expanses of the world’s oceans are vital for understanding Palaeozoic ecology. They are the best and often the only fossil group for dating Lower Palaeozoic rock successions precisely.

A possible early graptolite, Chaunograptus, is known from the Middle Cambrian. graptolites were most abundant in warm, perhaps tropical to sub-tropical, waters and that most ap pear to have floated in waters over the outer parts of the shelves or platforms (Berry, 1979). Recently, Berry and Wilde (1978) and Wilde and Berry (1982,1984) applied fundamental con cepts of physical and chemical oceanography to Graptolites. Graptolites are of frequent occurrence, and have been found in the Wagga Trough at localities as far north as Cobar (Tallebung Group).
